Congrats to our Resident Athletes!

We're very excited that our two Resident Athletes – Skier Mikaela Shiffrin and Triathlete Josiah Middaugh – both celebrated big wins over the weekend. Shiffrin, who used our Athletic Club to help battle her way back from a knee injury earlier this season, won the Slalom title at the U.S. National Championships in Sun Valley on Friday. And Middaugh won the XTERRA Argentina race on Saturday. Way to go champions!!

Maya Spring FAC this Friday!

Studio Anjali offering 2 Restorative Yoga Classes on Sunday, March 20th

Give your body a chance to welcome spring and recover from another active winter with a special Restorative Yoga Class at our Studio Anjali on Sunday, March 20thfrom 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 

Unwind your body and mind into a blissful union of rest, rejuvenation and clarity with this centering practice. Using soft music, a warm room, bolster and yoga blankets, let us guide you through a series of comfortable yoga poses that will invite healing and calmness into your being.

Open to all levels of yogis, the practice will be led by Tara Goike, who has been teaching yoga in the Vail Valley since 2003 and has more than 500 hours of yoga teacher training.

Herradura Tequila Dinner on March 12th

Maya is thrilled to be welcoming Ruben Aceves of Casa Herradura - one of Mexico’s most historic and renowned tequila producers - on Saturday, March 12th for a special Tequila Tasting & Dinner featuring five of Herradura’s 100% blue agave tequilas, including two bottles of Maya’s signature blend.

This exclusive evening will feature a special Mexican menu created by Maya Executive Chef Kevin Delonay, including:

  • Tlacoyo de Cordero – Braised lamb with jicama salad & chile morita

Lead the Pack Swim Clinic with Josiah Middaugh

Join us on March 5th for the Lead the Pack Swim Stroke Clinic with our Resident Triathlete World Champion Josiah Middaugh on Saturday, March 5th. Open to the public, this clinic is designed to help swimmers reduce drag, streamline their stroke and have a more efficient kick.  The clinic will be held from 9 a.m. – noon with 1.5 hours of classroom instruction followed by a group lesson. Each participant will also also enjoy 1 hour of private instruction with Middaugh over that weekend.

Josiah Middaugh named Resident Triathlete World Champion at The Westin Riverfront

We are thrilled to announce that local professional triathlete Josiah Middaugh – the current XTERRA World Champion – is now serving as our Resident Triathlete World Champion.

Middaugh joins ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin, who serves as our Resident Gold Medalist. 

An 11-time XTERRA USA National Champion and 6-time USSSA National Snowshoe Champion, Middaugh is well known throughout the Vail Valley as an elite level, multi-disciplined athlete.  On top of leading the Athletic Club’s Master Swim program, he coaches more than 50 athletes nationwide through his Middaugh Coaching. 

Middaugh will be holding a variety of special events here at The Westin Riverfront, including lectures and workshops for Athletic Club members and resort guests.

“We are thrilled to offer our resort guests and Athletic Club members an exclusive chance to interact with this top endurance athlete,” said Westin Riverfront General Manager Kristen Pryor. “Josiah is amazing to work with because he is so passionate and able to connect with athletes of all levels and aspirations.”

Middaugh holds a Masters Degree in Human Movement, a Bachelors Degree in Health Promotion and Rehabilitation and is a certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He lives with his wife and three children in the Vail Valley. 

“I pride myself on integrity, humbleness, sportsmanship and hard work,” said Middaugh. “I have a profound love for endurance sports and I try to always remain approachable, especially to amateur athletes in the sport in my role as a coach, trainer and fellow athlete on the course.”

The Athletic Club at The Westin is launching its newly renovated Movement Studio and new programming – including AIReal Yoga™, TRX and KO - on Wednesday, Feb. 10th with a special Love is in the AIR event. 

Held from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Athletic Club members and the public are invited to demo our new Movement Studio class concepts, meet the Athletic Club team members and enjoy healthy snacks!

The Athletic Club  is excited to be the Vail Valley’s first studio to offer a dedicated aerial yoga program. Several AIReal Yoga™ classes will be available weekly, with a $20 fee for drop-ins or 10-class punch cards available for $150. The classes are free for Athletic Club members.

Celebration for XTERRA World Champion Josiah Middaugh

This Sunday, The Athletic Club at The Westinand Dogma Athletica will co-host a special celebration for local professional triathlete Josiah Middaugh, who won the XTERRA World Championships in Maui, Hawaii on Nov. 1st. 

 The community celebration will be held at Maya starting at 6 p.m.

The event will include an autograph session and remarks from Middaugh about his championship race and season.  Middaugh is well known throughout the Vail Valley as an elite level, multi-disciplined athlete.  He also coaches the Athletic Club’s Master Swim program, is a marquee trainer at Dogma Athletica and coaches athletes of all levels and aspirations through Middaugh Coaching. 

“The entire Vail Valley is excited about Josiah’s win and we wanted to come together as a community to celebrate this major accomplishment,” said Athletic Club Director Jen Razee. “We have followed his successes closely over the years and are keenly aware of how hard he worked to achieve the top step on Sunday.”

It was Middaugh’s 15th year competing in the off-road triathlon event; he previously finished twice as first runner-up. East West Resorts Executive Vice President Peter Dann also was crowned an age-group champion last Sunday, placing first in the amateur 60-64 division.

“It is wonderful to have such a humble personality training and sharing his expertise at Dogma Athletica,” said Dogma Athletica Owner Rod Connolly.  “Josiah’s biggest fans are probably his clients, they are excited to celebrate this achievement with him.”

 A complimentary keg of Crazy Mountain beer will be available to all attendees who are 21 and over.  Maya will also be serving its 2 Dine for $49 dinner special, where patrons can enjoy one appetizer, two entrees and one dessert for $49. GO PINK Fundraiser at Spa Anjali this Wednesday!

Spa Anjali and Athletic Club are hosting a special GO PINK fundraiser for the Vail Valley’s Shaw Regional Cancer Center this Wednesday, Oct. 28th.

AIReal Yoga Teacher Training Workshop

Studio Anjali at The Westin Riverfront Beaver Creek is excited to be hosting a special AIReal Yoga Teacher Training Immersion Workshop on Dec. 3-8, 2015.


AIReal Yoga™ is the first and only form of aerial yoga accredited by the Yoga Alliance. Led by AIReal Yoga™ founder Carmen Curtis, the 50-hour workshop, hosted by Studio Anjali, is an opportunity to explore the asana with an aerial dynamic by using the hammock as a yoga prop. Autograph Signing Session with Resident Gold Medalist Mikaela Shiffrin!

Please join us for special autograph session with our Resident Gold Medalist Mikaela Shiffrin this Friday, Sept. 18th starting at 5:30 p.m. Vail Valley native Shiffrin - who won Olympic gold in Sochi and is the reigning World Cup slalom champion – will sign ski helmets and race photos for 45 minutes. Handstand & Mala Making Workshops this September

Studio Anjali is hosting two unique new workshops this September – a Mala Making Workshop on Sept. 19th and a two-part Handstand Workshop on Sept. 12th & Oct. 3rd.

MALA MAKING WORKSHOP

Malas are strings of prayer beads used to chant mantras or pray. They can be used for yoga practices or to help with your own personal meditation or religious prayers. A traditional Mala is made out of 108 beads and a tassel, plus one bead to serve as the guru bead marker. Mala beads are made out of natural materials to provide the Mala with a special kind of energy.

Led by guest instructor Mindy Arbuckle, Studio Anjali’s Mala Making Workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19th from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. The price is $35 in advance or $40 day-of. Beads can be purchased starting at $25.

HANDSTAND WORKSHOP

Studio Anjali’s two-part Handstand Workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12th and Saturday, Oct. 3rd, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Led by Claire Evans, this is a step-by-step workshop on how to build your handstand practice. Part 1 will include an introduction to handstand anatomy and prep poses. Part 2 will expand your handstand into the next posture, integrating what you learned from Part 1 and from your weekly practice routine.

Offered on Fridays from 7 a.m. – 8:15 a.m. from June 5th to Aug. 28th, this unique and invigorating new program will be led by Studio Anjali Yoga Lead Tanya Miller, who combines her 20+ years of backcountry guide experience with the yoga studio to promote outdoor recreation, a mindfulness practice and asana postures.

Yoga in Motion begins with a 55 minute outdoor, guided mindfulness walk for all ability levels followed by 20 minutes of revitalizing Hatha Yoga postures. This practice is designed to awaken your senses and energize your soul.

Westin Riverfront Run with a View 5K

We are excited to share that we will be celebrating National Running Day with a special Westin Run with a View 5K on Wednesday, June 3rd. Free and open to the public, this 5K walk/run will leave from The Westin Riverfront’s Gondola Plaza at noon.

Join The Westin’s Run Concierge Tamara Donelson and Athletic Club Director Jen Razee on the course, which will go west on the Eagle River bike path, around Nottingham Lake, then back along the bike path to end at The Westin Riverfront. 

Along the way, be sure to take in the gorgeous Vail Valley views and look for the “Insta-worthy” photo locations where you can snap a picture and post it on social media for a chance to win a variety of great prizes, including a getaway to The Westin Riverfront. Obstacle Course Training Program

Out Athletic Club is offering a 6-week Obstacle Course Training Program starting on May 5th with the goal of getting ready for the June Spartan Races in Breckenridge.

Offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m., this progressive training course is designed to prepare you for the summer obstacle course and mud run race season. Participants will work on short and mid-distance running (¼ to ½ mile intervals), as well as crawling, lifting, dragging and jumping. The course will also focus on upper and lower body agility exercises. A team from the Athletic Club will run the 3-mile Spartan Sprint race in Breckenridge on Saturday, June 13.

Westin Athletic Club personal trainer and ski conditioning coach Jeff Draper will lead the course. Draper is an NSCA certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist who is also a Certified Rolfer and Cold Laser Therapist.

In celebration of Mother Earth, we will be hosting a special 108 Sun Salutations Yoga Event with Suyra Trobaugh this Saturday, April 25th from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 

A Sun Salutation – or "Surya Namaskar" - is the ancient technique of paying respect and expressing gratitude to the Sun as the source of all life on our planet. Surya will guide the first several salutations, then as a community, the group will flow from one salutation to the next. This free event will be held in Studio Anjali is open to the public, with no advanced registration required.

As the first resort in Colorado to achieve LEED Silver Certification, we currently have more than 150 active sustainability guidelines in place.  In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, the resort will also be offering tips on how to reduce your water consumption and is also placing eco-friendly tales like The Lorax and Where the Bees Come From in public spaces throughout the resort.

A major environmental focus this year for The Westin Riverfront is continuing to reduce its water consumption. In 2014, our overall occupancy increased by 2 percent, but our water usage decreased by 5 percent. 

The Westin Riverfront is also a proud participant of the Clean the World program, which sends partially used amenity bottles and soap products to people in need in the developing world.  Last year, we donated more than 1,078 pounds of waste, including 1,976 bars of soap and 1,415 plastic water bottles. This year, we also plan to implement a composting program and will complete an LED light bulb retrofit in all public hallways. We are also installing a repurposed pool bar that was originally created for Vail Beaver Creek 2015 by a local artist and made from reclaimed Pine Beetle Kill wood.

Our Athletic Club wants to help you feel great this spring with two new workout programs: a Spring Shape-Up Boot Camp beginning on April 21 and an 8-week Run Club starting on April 28.

8-Week Run Club 

Led by Athletic Club trainer and XTERRA Pro Triathlete Tamara Donelson, the 8-week Run Club will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. from April 28 – June 20.

This training group is specifically designed for participants interested in working toward a running goal and to boost their fitness levels. Gain skills to guide you through the VRD Summer Solstice 5K or 10K races on June 20 or apply them to the full VRD Running Series this summer. The cost is $80 for Athletic Club members, $120 for the public. Drop-in sessions are $10 for members or $15 for the public.

Spring Shape-Up Boot Camp

Led by Certified Fitness Instructor and 6-time Ironman finisher Carrie Larson, the Spring Shape-Up Boot Camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 21 – May 28.  

This six-week program is designed for participants interested in weight management and fitness level transformation, using interval, core and strength training to improve muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance. Participants will take before & after biometric measurements and fitness tests to help them set realistic and attainable goals.

The package price for the Spring Shape-Up Boot Camp is $225 for Athletic Club members and $305 for the public and includes biometric testing, a $100 Spa Anjali gift card, the Fitness Pal app, weekly challenges and nutrition tips. The drop-in price per class is $40 for the public and $20 for Athletic Club members.

Maya is celebrating Easter with a special Holiday Brunch on Sunday, April 2nd from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. We will also be hosting an Easter Egg & Scavenger Hunt starting at 11 a.m. for kids 5 and under, 11:30 a.m. for kids ages 6-9 years old and Noon for kids ages 10-12 years old. The Westin’s Kids Club will also be offering special family-friendly Easter craft activities in the lobby.

Maya’s holiday brunch will feature a Build Your Own Omelet Station and a Carving Station serving Roast Prime Rib of Beef and Honey Glazed Ham. Other menu items include a spinach & mushroom frittata, malted waffles and Huevos Rancheros.

Maya will also be serving scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, parfaits, yogurt and granola, assorted pastries, cheese and charcuterie, shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon and roasted asparagus salad with prosciutto and truffle vinaigrette.

Guests can also enjoy a Bunny Treats Dessert Table, stacked high with Chocolate decadence, apple cake, goat cheese cheesecake, mini cupcakes, tartlets and Easter cookies.

WALKING MOUNTAINS SCIENCE CENTER SNOWSHOE TOURS

The Westin Riverfront is pleased to have partnered with Vail Valley’s Walking Mountains Science Center to offer 2-5 hour guided snowshoe excursions on Mondays and Wednesdays in the White River National Forest. The Beginner Snowshoe Experiences are recommended for ages 14+. The resort is also offering Thursday Nature at Night walks that are open to all ages. MAYA KIDS TABLE
